UK Visa Photo Requirements
Your photo must be clear, sharp and in colour. It should be taken in a well-lit room and must not be edited, filtered or digitally altered in any way.
The photo must:
Be at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels high
Be between 50KB and 6MB
Be saved as a JPG or JPEG file
Be in portrait orientation
Not be mirrored or flipped
The image must show only you, with no other people or objects visible. It should be taken against a plain, light-coloured background, with enough contrast to make you clearly visible.
The photo must show your head, shoulders and upper body. Your face should be free from red-eye, shadows and obstructions.
You must:
Face the camera directly
Look straight at the camera
Keep a neutral expression
Keep your mouth closed
Keep your eyes open and clearly visible
Make sure your hair does not cover your eyes
Wear suitable clothing that covers your shoulders and upper body
Head coverings are not permitted unless they are worn for religious or medical reasons.
The photo may be taken using a phone or tablet. It is recommended that another person take the photo, as this may reduce the risk of it being rejected.
The photo must not:
Be a scan or photograph of another photo
Include any other person or object
Be the same image used in your passport or identity card
Show your passport, identity card or any other document
You should avoid wearing glasses unless they are necessary.
When glasses must be worn:
They must not be sunglasses or tinted glasses
The frames must not cover your eyes
There must be no glare, reflection or shadow
Your eyes must be clearly visible
Children must appear alone in the photo. Babies must not be holding toys or using a dummy or pacifier.
Children under six do not need to look directly at the camera or maintain a neutral expression.
Children under one year old do not need to have their eyes open. Their head may be supported, but the supporting hand must not be visible.
Babies under one should be placed on a plain, light-coloured sheet and photographed from directly above.
When applying on behalf of another person, including a child, the photo must clearly show that person’s face.
A digital photograph may be unsuitable when:
A digital UK visa photo must be at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall. The current UKVI guidance does not specify one exact maximum pixel dimension.
The current maximum file size is 6 MB. The file must be at least 50 KB.
The photograph must be saved as a JPG or JPEG file.
Not in most current digital application processes. The 35 × 45 mm format is commonly used for printed UK passport photographs. Visa applicants are usually asked to provide a digital image through an app, upload process or biometric appointment.
Follow the instructions issued for your particular visa application.
Current UKVI digital-photo guidance does not establish a general requirement for every applicant to submit two printed photographs. Do not use the two-photo UK passport requirement as a universal visa rule.
Yes. UKVI permits the photo to be taken with a phone or tablet when a digital photograph is requested.
No. UKVI guidance says the digital visa photograph must not be the same photograph used in your passport or identity card.
The photograph must not be altered by computer software or other means. Take the original image against a suitable plain, light-coloured background instead of relying on a synthetic or heavily edited replacement.
Use a plain expression with your mouth closed. Children under six do not need to maintain a plain expression.
When you attend a visa application centre to provide biometrics, staff normally take a digital photograph of your face. Follow the appointment instructions to determine whether you need to provide anything else.
