Photo age and authenticity

  • The photo must have been taken within the last two years. 
  • It must show the applicant’s real appearance and must not be edited, retouched, enhanced, mirrored, composited, or digitally altered.

Digital photo file requirements

  • A digital photo must be in JPG format. 
  • The file size must not exceed 5 MB.

Framing and composition

  • The photo must be a close-up of the head and upper shoulders. 
  • The face should take up 70% to 80% of the whole photo.
  • The applicant must face the camera directly, with the head upright and not tilted or turned.

Background and lighting

  • The background must be plain white. 
  • Lighting must be even, with no shadows, glare, flash reflection, or red-eye. 
  • Brightness and contrast must be suitable, and skin tone must appear natural.

Image quality and printing

  • The image must be sharp, clear, focused, and high quality. 
  • A printed photo must be printed on high-quality glossy photo paper and must not have stains, ink marks, folds, or creases.

Face and identifying features

  • The eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows, facial outline, both ears, and special features such as moles, birthmarks, or scars must be clearly visible. 
  • The photo must be clear enough to identify the applicant.

Eyes and expression

  • The applicant’s eyes must be open and looking directly at the camera. 
  • The mouth must be closed, and the expression must be natural and not exaggerated. 
  • A slight smile is allowed.

Glasses

  • Clear eyeglasses are allowed only if the eyes remain fully visible. 
  • The lenses must not have reflections, and the frame must not cover any part of the eyes. 
  • Tinted glasses, colored contact lenses, and cosmetic enlarging lenses are not allowed, except that visually impaired applicants may wear tinted glasses.

Hair, wigs, and facial hair

  • Hair may be tied, dyed, or worn long, but it must not cover the eyebrows, eyes, or required facial features. 
  • Sideburns should not intentionally cover the ears. 
  • Wigs, beards, and mustaches are allowed. 
  • Applicants with microtia may have hair covering the ear area, but the sides of the face must remain visible.

Religious head coverings

  • A headscarf worn for religious reasons is allowed if the full face remains visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead and along both sides of the face.

Accessories

  • Earrings, nose rings, and similar accessories are allowed as long as they do not cover the required facial features or facial outline.

Other people and objects

  • The photo must show only the applicant. 
  • It must not include other people, chair backs, toys, or other objects.

Back of printed photo

  • The back of a printed photo must state the applicant’s name, National ID number, and the date the photo was taken.

Clothing recommendation

  • Dark-colored clothing is recommended. 
  • Light-colored clothing should be avoided because it may affect the appearance of the photo and the ID card.
