Photo age

• The photograph must be no more than six months old and must be professionally printed.

Background

• The photograph must be taken against a plain white or light-colored background.

Composition and framing

• The image must show a close-up of your head and the top of your shoulders. 
• Your face should occupy about 70 to 80 percent of the photograph. 
• No one else may appear in the image, and no objects, such as chair backs, should be visible.

Image quality

• The photograph must be clear, sharp, and high in quality. 
• It must not show any ink marks, creases, or other damage.
•  If the image is taken digitally, it must be a high-resolution color photograph. 
• The brightness and contrast must be well balanced, and your skin tone must appear natural.

Pose and expression

• You must face the camera directly with your head in a straight position. 
• You must not tilt your head or look away from the camera. 
• Both sides of your face must be fully visible. Your expression must be neutral, and your mouth must be closed.

Lighting and color

• The photograph must have a natural color balance. 
• The lighting must be even, with no shadows across your face. 
• Flash reflections and red-eye are not allowed.

Eyes and hair

• Your eyes must be open and clearly visible. 
• Your hair must not block your eyes.

Glasses and head coverings

• You must not wear glasses in the photograph. 
• Head coverings are permitted only if your entire face remains visible. 
• Your face must be clearly shown from the bottom of your chin to the top of your forehead, including both sides of your face.
