It must be a close-up of the head and the top of the shoulders, with the face occupying approximately 70–80% of the image.
The photograph must be clear, sharp, and in focus, with no shadows, ink marks, creases, or staple marks.
It must be of high quality and not a scanned image or a colour photocopy.
The applicant must look directly at the camera with a neutral expression.
Skin tone must appear natural, with appropriate brightness and contrast.
The photograph must be recent, taken within the last six months.
Headgear, hats, or caps are not permitted.
Headgear may be allowed only on religious grounds, subject to case-by-case approval, provided the full facial features are clearly visible. The chin, nose, eyes, eyebrows, and the overall shape of the face must not be covered, and the forehead must be sufficiently visible.
Hair must be neatly tucked behind the ears.
