You must provide 2 identical and unaltered photos when submitting your passport application. The photos need to follow all of the official specifications listed below.

Size

  • 50 mm wide × 70 mm high (2 × 2¾ inches)
  • Face height: 31-36 mm (1¼-1⁷⁄₁₆ inches) chin to crown

Quality

  • The photos can be either in colour or in black and white, but they must always be clear, sharp, and completely in focus.
  • The lighting must be evenly distributed across your face, which means there can be no shadows, glare, or reflections caused by camera flash.
  • There needs to be a clear difference between your face and the background, so the outline of your head and face is fully visible.
  • The photo must reflect your natural skin tone and be taken in person by a professional photographer or studio.
  • The photos must be professionally printed on plain, high-quality photographic paper; photos printed at home or on heavy weight paper will not be accepted.
  • The photo must be an original, not a scanned or digitally altered copy.

Expression

  • A neutral facial expression is required.

A neutral expression means your eyes must be open and clearly visible, you must be looking directly at the camera, your mouth must remain closed, and you must not smile, frown, or raise your eyebrows.

Appearance and posture

  • The photos must be taken no more than six months before you apply.
  • Your face and shoulders must be centred in the photo and squared directly to the camera, without any tilt in any direction.
  • The background must be plain white or light-coloured, with no patterns or objects visible.
  • You may keep your hair down or up, but it must be pulled away from your face so that the edges of your face are visible.
  • Glasses are permitted, but your eyes must be fully visible and there must be no glare on the lenses.
  • Religious or medical head coverings are also permitted if worn daily, but your full face must be visible and the covering must not create any shadows on your face.
  • Photos with sunglasses, tinted glasses, red-eye effects, shadows on your face, background, or shoulders, or hats and head coverings worn only occasionally will not be accepted.
