Paper Photo Size requirements
Your photo must measure 50 millimetres wide by 70 millimetres high, which is two inches wide by two and three-quarters inches long.
The height of your face, from the bottom of your chin to the natural top of your head, must be between 31 millimetres and 36 millimetres, which is one and one-quarter inches to one and seven-sixteenths inches.
Quality requirements
Your photo must be clear, sharp, and in focus.
The lighting must be uniform, and there must be no shadows, glare, or reflections from a flash.
There must be a clear contrast between your face and the background, and the photo must show natural skin tones.
The image must be original and must not be altered in any way.
Digital photo requirements
Your digital photo must be in JPG or JPEG format with minimal compression.
The image must be at least 420 pixels wide by 540 pixels high.
The file size should be approximately 240 kilobytes, and it must not exceed 4 megabytes.
Expression and posture
Your facial expression must be neutral.
Your eyes must be open and clearly visible, and your mouth must be closed with no smiling or frowning.
Your face and shoulders must face the camera directly
You must be centred and squared in the photo.
The background must be plain white or light coloured.
Appearance rules
Your photo must show your current appearance, which means it must have been taken within the six months before you submit your application.
Glasses may be worn if your eyes are clearly visible, the frames do not cover your eyes, and there is no glare on the lenses.
You may have your hair either up or down.
Hats or head coverings that you wear daily for religious or medical reasons are permitted if your full face is clearly visible and the covering does not create shadows on your face.
